about Dr. Michael Hatzakis:
Dr. Hatzakis is board certified in Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation. Doctors in Physical Medicine are
also called Physiatrists and focus on improving function and quality of
life.
He graduated from the State University of New
York at Stony Brook
with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering where he went on to receive a
Masters of Engineering degree.
He completed the Post-baccalaureate Pre-medical Program at
Columbia University.
Dr.
Hatzakis then worked as an engineer for several years before entering
medical school at Stanford University
School of Medicine in California where he
also developed neural prosthetic devices under a joint program between
Stanford medical school and the Department of Electrical
Engineering. He did his residency training in Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation at Thomas
Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.
Dr. Hatzakis then
joined the University of
Washington medical school faculty
in Seattle
as an academic professor in the Department of
Rehabilitation Medicine. He has published in the area of chronic
disease, multiple sclerosis, treatment of fatigue in MS, and the use of
Medical Informatics in support of individuals with disabilities. More

During his tenure at the UW, he worked at the VA
hospital and ran multiple programs to support our Veterans with
disabilities including Director of Acute Neuro-Rehabilitation at the VA
hospital and Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program. He was
a founder of the Subacute Rehabilitation Unit, and
co-founder and associate director of one of two national VA Multiple Sclerosis Centers of Excellence. He also started a Back
Pain Rehabilitation Program at the American Lake VA hospital.
Dr. Hatzakis
lectures on the topics of back pain for primary care doctors and surgeons,
cardiac rehabilitation, as well as multiple topics in Information
Technology. Full List
of Lectures. He is a founder of the Eastside Interoperability
Committee (EIC ), whose mission it is to
foster electronic collaboration to improve quality of health care on
the East Side of the Puget Sound Region. He started Bellevue
Rehabilitation Associates in 2005 to serve the holistic management of
back pain, neck pain, workplace injuries, sports injuries and joint
diseases.
